Beyond the Classroom

Great schooling is much more than just what goes on in the classroom.  At Rangitīkei College students have the opportunity to pursue a range of activities that challenge them, and help them grow in character.

Student Leadership

Students are encouraged to develop their skills in leading others in a variety of ways from Year 9 onwards.

The student body is led by the Prefect Team (Year 13). Prefects cover a range of portfolios, including Sport, Community Engagement, School Spirit and so on.

House Captains and their Deputies lead their houses and work hard to organise activities as well as cheerlead their houses to success.

Other leadership opportunities arise for specific tasks such as our Environmental group, Librarian, Bus Monitors and Student Volunteer Army.

Sport

A comprehensive sport programme is offered, led by our sport coordinator and Active Recreation. Depending on the sport, students may compete in Whanganui or Palmerston North, and we offer van transport to get them there.

We have outstanding sports facilities, and in 2024 are able to offer all regular sports in the school free of charge.

Sports offered depend on demand and availability of coaches, but we currently have teams for Basketball, Volleyball, Football, Hockey, Canoe Polo, Rugby, Archery, Golf, Cricket and Netball. We are re-establishing Rugby in the school, and students also successfully compete in regional Athletics, Cross-country, and Swimming championships

Arts

Students are also involved in a range of extracurricular activities involving the creative arts. These include DanceNZMade, Rockquest and Pasifika Fusion.

In 2024 we are hoping to complete construction of our new Performing Arts facility. This new space will have a purpose built Drama room and Dance studio and greatly improve the opportunities in this area.

Kapa Haka

Our new Kapa Haka group is beginning to develop and will be involved in regional events in coming years.

Pasifika Aiga group

Our Vibrant Aiga group is very active and their focus for the year is the regional Pasifika Fusion event run over two days in Palmerston North. This event is preceded by a FiaFia night which involves a number of performances open to all.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of activities for anyone aged 14-24.  The Award can play a vital role in providing opportunities for young people to develop essential life skills, increase their employability and foster their creativity and innovation.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award students have to take part in four different activities; the Expedition, Volunteering, Skill and Physical.  Gold Award students also have to participate in a five-day residential.  Apart from the expedition, all activities should be organised independently by the students, who have to log their activities, upload any evidence, and then ask someone (not a parent) to write an Assessor Report for them.

Currently the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award is offered through the Inquiry-Quest programme, but students can work towards this independently of I-Q.

The website Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award has useful information about the types of activities students can count towards their award, and forms.
